When I sat down to write this short report, I decided whatever I did, I would present an even keel. I would be pragmatic without being pessimistic. I would be encouraging without being naive.

And then I opened my favourite news sources, and discovered Covid-19 is now officially a global pandemic, that Eskom’s outages are possibly worse than at any time, ever, that Sasol has lost 95% of its value since last year, and, most upsetting of all, Tom Hanks is feeling poorly.

It’s all starting to feel a little dramatic, isn’t it? And it’s not as if South Africa was a health spa and mediation retreat before Covid-19 arrived. Indeed, you know a country is probably a tad stressed when seven hours of blackouts every day are your second-biggest worry...
