You might hear some bad things later today. I can’t tell you what they are, but they’re not true, and I need you to ignore them. OK? Can you promise me that you’re not going to listen when things start being said, and once they’re said, will you forget all about them?
Of course you can’t. Because you’re human. Telling people that they might hear something you obviously don’t want them to hear, and then asking them not to react to it, has never, in the entire history of humanity, made people shrug and say: “Fair enough. I suppose I’ll just put it out of my mind and get on with work, then.”
