Fifty-plus minutes, a house on fire and a whole lot of smoke from the City

Joburg’s fire department is still a mess and we pay the price, as I witnessed first-hand last week


Our neighbours’ house burned down last week.

A lightning rod and brick chimney still stand defiant above a white garden wall, the remnants of what I imagine was a happy family home. But the thatch roof and everything that was beneath it is ash.

On Wednesday evening just after 9pm the roof caught fire – the owners are unsure why – but Craighall Park, a leafy middle-class suburb in Johannesburg, was into its first hour of load shedding...
