2016, London

[After many months of preparation, British Vogue’s photo shoot of the Duchess of Cambridge was at last taking place.] The duchess is unassuming, gentle and phenomenally polite. We keep asking her if she is all right about doing another picture or wearing a certain piece of clothing, or indeed being made to stand in the freezing cold, and she only replies that she’s happy if we are. Of all of us, she is the only one never to check her smartphone. Does she read Twitter? Is she on Instagram? I wonder but don’t ask. She has the narrowest of waists and, despite two children, there is no bulk at all to her torso. She is also devoid of vanity, scarcely checking herself in the mirror once dressed and never fussing about how she looks. It is quite extraordinary...
