[Coward was playing host to the eccentric British playwright Clemence Dane at his island retreat.] She talks wisely and informatively up to the point where she gets carried away and begins to show off. Then steps have to be taken. Our evenings are loud with argument. She also, with unmistakable Freudian compulsion, never stops saying hair-raising things such as, “Stick it right up dear, ram it, ram it, and then wiggle-wiggle it out again.” This apropos of an armature for modelling. Then, “You must clean your tool, dear boy!” etc...
