In early November 2015, former Sunday Times photographer Simphiwe Nkwali and I spent a week driving around SA’s drought-ravaged northern provinces.
On farms, in rural villages and in small towns, the stories were similar everywhere we went: our livelihoods are at stake, our livestock is dying, our lives are being torn apart.
At the time, 9.3 million people across the country were affected, and five provinces had been declared disaster areas. In KwaZulu-Natal alone, about 40,000 head of cattle had to be put down directly due to the drought...
