Complaints about difficult matric exam papers are not adding up

The media pages lit up this week with bitter complaints from pupils and parents (not sure why parents are involved) that mathematics P1 (Paper 1) was too difficult for this year’s matriculants.

From what I could gather there were two main problems. One, the questions were too complex. Pupils and teachers argued that a good examination paper has an Oprah-type distribution of questions – there’s something there for everyone!

There are some challenging questions for the really bright pupils, a good sample of questions for the average pupil, but also some simple questions for the weaker mathematics pupil...
