Obituary: SA loses a ‘king’ in Israel

The actor played the adult Simba in the stage version of ‘The Lion King’ for 10 years and got as far as Broadway

Andile Gumbi, who has died in Israel at the age of 36, was the star of hugely popular TV soapie Isibaya, drama series Makoti and the stage production of Sarafina. He also played the title role in the musical King Kong at the Fugard Theatre in Cape Town and the Mandela Theatre in Johannesburg in 2017.

Above all, however, the actor, singer, dancer and model was known for playing the adult Simba, the disillusioned, self-exiled prince who matures into the King of Pride Rock, in Disney’s long-running musical The Lion King.
