I was struck this week by a random online headline that cheerfully announced: “Striking teachers test progressive new mayor.”
As someone burdened by the fatal flaw of gutter-mindedness, my first thought was that the new mayor of whichever place this was must be progressive indeed if she or he allowed herself or himself to be “tested” by teachers, although if those teachers were as strikingly good-looking as the headline suggested, maybe the test drive wouldn’t be so bad.
Then I realised that “striking” did not refer to the attractiveness of the teachers but to the activity they were engaged in. I’m afraid I can’t tell you who the teachers were or why they were on strike because by then the story didn’t seem as interesting...
