Really, Kodwa? R50k gets you only a spin on the gravy train

On Sunday, deputy minister of state security Zizi Kodwa was named as having received R50,000 from an account linked to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s election campaign, an amount he refuses to explain on the grounds that he has broken no laws. The next day, he suggested the judiciary should appear before the Zondo commission to account for “some of the cases” where “it’s obvious money is involved”.

Some readers will be connecting dots, believing the timing of these two events seems more than coincidental. Some will be thinking about the current tendency of justice to run backwards in SA: where in theory an investigation leads to a prosecution and the courts passing judgment, politicians now pass judgment on the courts shortly before talk turns to the possibility of investigation and prosecution.

Such thinking, however, is unhelpful. There are enough real conspiracies in SA without cooking up new ones. Besides, Kodwa already seems to be getting a rough deal in the media...
