It’s been a bad week for disc jockeys. Just two days after DJ Fresh was fired from Metro FM for using misogynistic swearwords on air, his compatriot Phat Joe was suspended for making homophobic comments on Radio 2000.

The SABC may be quite right to muzzle these menaces for violating the dignity of women and gay men, but in its statement about the Fresh affair, the state broadcaster itself employed some offensive language.

The official release stated that the “termination follows unsuccessful engagements between SABC Radio Management and Mr Thato Sikwane [DJ Fresh’s other name], subsequent to his usage of offensive language on-air”. ..
