I don’t know how to write about this awful day. I didn’t expect Beb [her husband] till 2.20, so had arranged to lunch with my grandmother. Was back soon after two, ran into room in high spirits. Beb said, “I’m afraid there’s bad news”, and gave me an opened letter from Papa. “The worst is true about Ego [her eldest brother]. The officer prisoners of Angora certify that he was killed at Katia … I have wired to Guy Wyndham at Clouds. I don’t know how Letty [Ego’s wife] will be told. It is very cruel and we must help each other to bear it.”..
