See how the land lies: This is how we’re being conned

Here are a few of the unconscionable, blatant untruths that have been thrown at hapless consumers

Lies, fibs, untruths, misrepresentations ... call them what you will, but an awful lot of them get told to consumers in order to close a deal or justify the company’s consumer-unfriendly policies. And then there are the outright scams, which have fraudsters lying about everything, from start to finish.

So essentially a lot of my job involves exposing lies; lots of lies. Let’s have a look at the lies my inbox carried this past week.

The biggest whopper was the tender scam a Durban businesswoman fell for. She received an e-mail from the “Drakenstein Municipality” inviting her to tender to supply 150 very specific protective suits. As is always the case with these scam tenders, only one company, Coltan Traders of KwaZulu-Natal, supplied it. So last week she paid that fake company R136,000 for suits which didn’t exist and certainly weren’t delivered...
