Anybody have an idea where we are and where we’re going?

FREE TO READ | I’ve lost my sense of what the rules are, or who’s making them. Are we pointed in the same direction?

What separates humans from animals is our ability to anticipate. Take that away and we’ll be lost in a wilderness of indecision. It’ll become difficult to understand, let alone be able to explain, to reverse engineer actual decisions back to the logic that drove them. It’ll be virtually impossible to plan what may happen next, and why – to prevent or endorse it.

This absence of certainty has a huge cost. It is impossible to see into the future. All the more reason, then, to have a shared, resilient set of anchors to hold it together.

Decisions get delayed if we don’t have these steady points of reference on which to reliably base them. Geometry fails, stars can’t be found, we get lost. Instead of “Ah, I thought so”, we’re dealing with “Where the hell did that come from?”..
