A Telkom-Cell C team would give MTN and Vodacom a go

Speculation swirls that a buyout is in the offing

Even with massive debt casting a shadow on Cell C, recent events suggest it is still an attractive prospect for a suitor.

The vague announcement by Telkom, which is spending billions to beef up its mobile telecoms arsenal, that it is in talks for a major acquisition,  has sparked speculation that it is trying its luck once again for Cell C.

Blue Label and Net1 have injected about R7.5bn into Cell C in exchange for a combined 60% in equity. The two may have won the battle for the stake, but the war has proven too much for them, as shown by declines in their share prices...
