Job creation firmly on track at revamped Alstom train factory

Gauteng Premier David Makhura will soon officially launch Alstom Ubunye’s 80,000m² factory in the small Ekurhuleni town of Nigel, 65km from Johannesburg.

Amid slowing manufacturing activity in SA, the revamped plant is proof that not all is lost for local industry. The facility builds train components for Gibela Rail Consortium, which is revitalising rail transport in metropolitan areas.

Deindustrialisation and waning manufacturing activity have contributed heavily to unemployment in SA. Thriving centres of economic activity have turned into ghost towns. ..
