The housing market is hot, but would you invest in it?

A smart fund manager might consider putting together a listed fund with varied types of residential assets

In a commercial property market starved of fresh JSE listings, people need to get creative if they want to take portfolios public.

One possible type of listing that could gain traction is a diversified residential fund. The housing shortage in SA’s cities has prompted both private and listed companies to develop new accommodation and to convert old offices into residential assets.

There have also been calls for a student-housing fund to list but this has not materialised. Last year Inkunzi Student Accommodation Fund tried to list but could not raise enough money from investors...
