In years to come Rain may become a worthwhile telecoms investment based on its business model as a data-only network.

For years SA’s mobile operators have longed for the day when voice and fixed-line revenues will no longer be the bread and butter of the industry.

With about 95 million subscribers between them, operators have moved into financial services, video streaming, instant messaging and other sectors in an effort to leverage their large user bases to create new businesses – much as Apple is doing with its new Apple TV+ video-streaming service, where each new device sold will give a customer free one-year access to the platform. With an average of 50 million Apple devices sold annually that’s a potentially large subscriber base in a short time...
