Mining speechwriters made SA look like prank amateurs

Embarrassing for the minister who truly does champion the local mining industry, unlike his predecessor Zwane

It’s difficult not to feel sorry for Gwede Mantashe. SA’s mineral resources and energy minister and champion of the industry was fed dud information by his scriptwriters.

His speechwriters made him look silly in front of some 400 delegates at a major African mining conference in Australia on Tuesday, feeding him a paragraph lifted verbatim out of an April Fool’s piece earlier this year about a nonsensical mineral called “Hazenile”.

No warning bells went off about the source of the mineral being the “Congo Caves” in the spoof piece. The speech writers set the stage for an embarrassing situation for the minister who truly does champion the local mining industry, unlike his predecessor Mosebenzi Zwane...
