The data coming from the World Gold Council on global gold output paints an utterly miserable picture of the once-proud stalwart of the SA mining industry.

In the 1970s SA was the world colossus in gold supply, reaching 1,000 tons early that decade.

In the past 50 years, however, it has gradually slipped to become less relevant, barely cracking a mention in the council’s updates – apart from being noted for another drop in production...
