Wannabe dictators are many, but there is great risk in placing too much power in the hands of one person

I used to be a disciple of benevolent dictators. I am not convinced any more.

Lee Kuan Yew transformed Singapore into an economic powerhouse based on the principles of meritocracy, pragmatism and honesty. But there are few LKYs. Dictators, or even wannabe dictators, are many. Some are already in power, others are prepared to do anything to get there.

There is great risk in placing too much power in the hands of one person – the line between benevolence and despotism has already been crossed too many times to take the chance...
