Christo Wiese, it turns out, wasn’t so intractable after all.

Monday’s announcement, that grocery giant Shoprite could not get minorities to agree to a R3.5bn share repurchase scheme, may be a victory for small shareholders.

But it may also be the inevitable outcome of a starting negotiation, with the end goal (for Wiese at least) still in sight...
