AngloGold: Hiring Ramos and Pityana keeps the flavour local

Despite the miner looking to dispose of its last two domestic operations, it hasn’t yet given up on SA

AngloGold Ashanti appointed Maria Ramos, a powerful figure in SA’s corporate world, to its board at an interesting time for one of the world’s top gold producers.

Under the new leadership of Canadian Kelvin Dushnisky, AngloGold is looking to dispose of three assets in Mali, Argentina and – probably most poignantly – in SA, its historical home base where it was once the colossus of the local gold mining sector.

After a spate of mine closures and sales in SA, AngloGold whittled its asset base down to just one ultra-deep gold mine, the world’s deepest at 4km below surface, and a tailings retreatment business...
